A little about beer and brewing in Armenia

Brewing in Armenia has deep historical roots, dating back to the ancient state of Urartu (9th–7th centuries BC), where beer, known as “garejur” or “barley water,” was a popular drink.

In the 19th century, during the Russian Empire, the first breweries were opened in Armenian cities such as Alexandropol (now Gyumri) and Kars. In Yerevan, the first beer producer was businessman Arutyun Avetyants, whose brewery was located in the picturesque Razdan Gorge.

In recent years, there has been a revival of brewing traditions in Armenia. Since 2015, the Yerevan Beer Fest has been held annually, attracting guests from all over the world.

In 2016, the first craft beer restaurant “Dargett” opened, offering more than 20 types of beer made using modern technologies.

Today, Armenia has both large breweries, such as the Abovian-based “Kotayk” brewery and JSC “Yerevan Beer,” as well as numerous small private breweries that contribute to the development of craft beer culture in the country.
